mostly photos and a few words about what we are doing, seeing, eating, and everything else in between...

Still feeling that Peru high, our goal for Santiago was to recharge and spend some time planning, especially since we planned on being back in January as a pitstop on our way to Patagonia (spoiler - we did indeed not make it back). We were attending a wedding in Mexico and it was actually cheaper and faster to relocate to Chile for our flight versus flying from Buenos Aires.
While we were there we walked around San Cristóbal Hill. What we thought were pints of beer were actually a sweet syrupy drink with peaches and wheat. One of the mountain bikers that helped us order chugged his in 5 minutes flat but consensus between us both was that it was too sweet.
Lucky for us, we were staying in Barrio Italia which was filled with great restaurants including a pizza shop, which also happened to serve delicious pastries in the mornings.
And of course, you can't go wrong with ice cream - even the dogs loved it!
It was a quick 3 days before it was time to head to Mexico but not without raiding the airport lounge snacks first. These alfajores with dulce de leche were so good they were dangerous. We ended up walking out of the lounge with a ziplock bag filled with about 18 of them - go ahead and judge us.
Always optimizing our credit card points usually meant flying the red eyes but we were starting to get pretty comfortable with the trade off.
Before you knew it, we were in Mexico. Tyler was dreaming of tacos the whole way there.
And he didn't skip a beat. It was straight from the CDMX airport to the bus terminal so we could make our way to San Miguel de Allende. but not without enjoying some "breakfast" tacos first.
SMdA was an amazing city! Not only were the colors of the city so vibrant, but so were the people! At one point, we were in search of lunch and ended up finding a restaurant highly rated for its burritos. There were no more than 4 seats at the counter and after we ordered our food we struck up a conversation with the owner. He was so kind, asking about New York and our travels. At one point when he realized he needed some cheese, he walked out of the shop, crossed the street to his home, and brought some from his own fridge to finish making our meal. We ended up meeting his daughter and another expat who picked up a burrito everyday on her way home from work.
SMdA is known for their iconic pink cathedral in the center of town so of course we had to grab a pic...
...but it was the beautiful stone side streets lined with boutique design shops that we loved browsing.
And we were lucky enough to catch a beautiful sunset from the roof of our Airbnb.
Something we started noticing in Mexico a lot of old Volkswagen Beatles. I guess the car is having a resurgence because playing 'slugbug' has now been incorporated into our lives and we have Mexico to thank for that.
We had high hopes for all of the different food we were going to have in Mexico and SMdA did not disappoint. In fact, we went to Tostévere twice for their tostadas, short rib sandwich, and...
flamed bananas with passion fruit ice cream! We were so full and still couldn't resist eating every last bite of this dessert because it was so good.
Our mini food tour was over - our friends in New York so kindly brought our suitcase with our wedding gear last seen in Utah and it was time to celebrate the beautiful wedding weekend of Jake & Claire!
Cheers to San Miguel de Allende and the happy couple! xoxo, Benito the Donkey
